What happens at a Natural Burial?

A natural burial really does mean a ‘return to nature’, with the deceased being placed in the earth without the use of embalming fluid or a traditional coffin.

The purpose is to have the minimum impact on the environment. Natural burial sites in St Leonards-on-Sea only allow biodegradable coffins, such as a simple, plain cardboard coffin. Our cardboard coffins are made of at least 70% recycled paper and wood pulp sourced from reputable sustainable forests. Other eco-friendly coffins including Bamboo, Willow and Pandan are also available.

Woodland Burial in St Leonards-on-Sea

If a natural burial or woodland funeral in St Leonards-on-Sea is preferred, there is the option in this part of East Sussex of laying a loved-one to rest in the Natural Burial Area at Hastings Borough Cemetery.

There is a specially set aside natural burial ground for eco burials and green funerals, with a natural woodland area which is not laid out in a formal manner with graves marked by headstones. Although the graves are accurately recorded on plans, and there is the possibility of graves being excavated to a double depth and arrangements exist for the reservation of an adjoining plot for those who wish to be buried beside other family members.

After each green burial and woodland funeral sufficient time must be permitted to allow soil settlement. After that time grass together with wildflower seeds will be sown on the grave.

As an alternative funeral, woodland burial costs are more affordable than a traditional funeral. Firstly, the coffin is very simple, with a cardboard coffin costing just £187. Secondly, you are not obliged to purchase the burial rights to the plot (normally £453) as the rights ascribed to the graves in a woodland burial ground can be held by the Cemetery Authorities.

What makes a good funeral?

Of all the decisions you have to make about the funeral, one of the most important for the success of the ceremony is 'who is going to conduct the service?' If you are, or the person who has died was, a member of a particular church family or faith group the decision will be easy - you will invite your own minister, priest, rabbi, imam etc.
